Martin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Jensen Beach man following a hit-and-run crash in February where authorities said the man’s vehicle struck and killed a Vero Beach bicyclist.
The arrest comes after a six-month investigation by Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office this week charged 24-year-old Zackary Kuhn with failure to remain at crash involving injury and driving with a suspended license, deputies said.
Kuhn is being held at the Martin County Jail on $50,250 bond. The bicyclist killed was identified in February as 67-year-old Steven C. Nichols.
FHP troopers said Kuhn was traveling north in a black 2007 four-door Pontiac about 8 p.m. Feb. 5 on Northwest Green River Parkway, just south of Jensen Beach Boulevard. The Pontiac struck Nichols, who was also traveling northbound in the inside lane on the shoulder.
Kuhn fled the area. Nichols, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
Authorities located Kuhn’s vehicle a day after the crash. Troopers detained the vehicle and launched an investigation, which led to Kuhn’s arrest.
Details on Kuhn’s arraignment were not immediately available.
