INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A freeze watch and warning and wind chill advisory are in effect from late Wednesday through Thursday morning, emergency services officials said.
Overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 20s and to the lower 30s across much of east central Florida. Very cold wind chills of about 24 to 29 degrees are expected after midnight.
A cold weather shelter will open Wednesday through Friday to help those in need escape the frigid weather.
A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are highly likely, officials said. These temperatures can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
Tips
- Plants: Bring sensitive plants indoors and water outdoor plants thoroughly. Dry plants are more prone to freezing. After watering, cover plants with a breathable material, such as fabric – not plastic.
- Pets: Do not leave your pets outside for long periods of time. If you can’t keep them indoors, set up a sufficient outdoor house or shelter.
- Fire Safety: Use caution with space heaters. Keep heater away from materials such as pillows, blankets, and curtains. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly.
- Carbon Monoxide Safety: Never start your car in a closed garage. Carbon monoxide can kill you and your pet.
