Phyllis J. Oakes, 80, of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 16, 2015.
Survivors include Sandy Layne (Bob) of Tallahasee, Kathryn Kries-Tribble of Grant, and Carla Klein (Ken) of Vero Beach, and Mickie (Gary) Thomas of Virginia; seven grandchildren: Bret, Shea, Caralyn, Jacob, Jeremiah, Matthew, and Rylee; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilda and Earl Duvall, daughter Sheree Y. Layne, and sisters June Porter, Florine Smith, and Maxine Allen.
Oakes was born in Boldman, Kent. and remained proud of her Pike County roots throughout
52 years of residing in Indian River County. She remembered her Sebastian friends at Palm Lake Club, having moved to Vero Beach with her youngest daughter in 2012.
“Phiesty Phyllis” was a Jewelry Consultant for Rhodes and Sons, Queens’, and Galleon’s Jewelers and over the years made many friends through her engraving skills, as well as her excellent cooking skills. She often made her famous walnut pies or beef vegetable soups for friends. Her family especially enjoyed her sausage gravy and biscuits and lasagnas.
Besides cooking, Mom’s favorite hobby was painting. She had many beautiful oil and acrylic paintings and most recently enjoyed making beautiful watercolor paintings with Bob at Michaels.
