INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Grand Harbor Audubon has named Don Morris its “Volunteer of the Year” for 2015. A mainstay of the organization for 10 years and a former board member, Morris was recognized for his “unique leadership and achievements” in creating and heading the Butterfly Garden within the Audubon Sanctuary that encompasses Grand Harbor and Oak Harbor.
A special plaque in the clubhouse will honor his role. In presenting the award, Deb Fletcher, immediate past president of the group and longtime colleague of Morris, cited his “vision and perseverance” as a teacher, doer and planner. “There’s no question that without Don’s spirit and drive, we would not have our thriving butterfly garden today,” she concluded.
Dr. Don Morris began his volunteer work with Audubon after retiring as a medical doctor with his practice in Vero Beach. His wife Pauline preceded him as a winner of the “Volunteer of the Year” award two years ago.
Grand Harbor Audubon has some 260 members and 500 participants in its activities. According to Neil Stalter, group president, its next step is creating a nature walk for members and guests to enjoy and learn more about the environment. “Don Morris will provide vital leadership to that undertaking which we hope to begin in the year ahead,” he said.
