The Indian River County Story at Heritage Center March 14

VERO BEACH — What do you know about the history of Indian River County?

Come to the Heritage Center on March 14 and learn some well known, and lesser known, facts about our county. We’ll also be celebrating Florida’s 500th anniversary as we work on filling the county’s Viva 500 time capsule.

Taking a new direction for this year’s event, the Heritage Center will be transformed into a huge timeline with various groups and individuals exhibiting on some aspect of our local history. We’ll go back to 12,000 BC courtesy of the Old Vero Ice Age Sites Committee.

You’ll be able to visit the land of the Ais Indians and see Sebastian, Fellsmere, and Vero established. The exhibit continues to present day and the preservation efforts ongoing in the city and county in 2013.

You will also be able to explore the history and heritage of Indian River County by viewing the collections of vintage photos and postcards courtesy of B.T. Cooksey, as well as perusing the incredible collection of citrus crate labels of the late George Hamner, Sr.

At the completion of your tour of the timeline, you’ll have accumulated several sheets of information, and Vero Heritage will provide a small notebook allowing you to create your own history book. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to learn about local history.

Admission for the event is $5 per person at the door. Admission is free if you become a new member of Vero Heritage that evening. The doors open at 5 p.m., and the event will run until 8 p.m.

Built in 1935 as the original Community Building, the Heritage Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a vital link to the history of our community. Funds generated from this event assist in the preservation and restoration of this important landmark which continues to be a center of activity for the community, hosting numerous public and private events including weddings, meetings, and dances.

Event sponsors include Waddell Insurance, Graves Brothers Company, Julia Carter, and Tiger Lily Gallery.
