INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Tax Collector is responsible for the collection of ad valorem taxes levied by the county’s various governments, the school board, and any special taxing districts within the county, and distributing real estate and tangible taxes. Other duties involve the issuance and renewal of motor vehicle license plates, vehicle and boat registrations, hunting and fishing licenses, occupational licenses and vehicle title transactions.
The four-year position is currently held by Carole Jean Jordan, who was elected to the post by the Republican Executive Committee in 2008 following the death of Stan Mayfield, who won the seat in the election but died prior to taking office. Jordan placed second behind Mayfield in the election.
Jordan faces two challengers for the seat, Thomas Lowther, a fellow Republican, and Barry Barnard, who has filed as No Party Affiliation.
Jordan and Lowther will square off in the August Primary Election and the winner will face Barnard in November’s General Election.
The Tax Collector has an annual salary of almost $117,000. The fiscal year 2011-12 budget for the office was $2.9 million.
