INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — There will be no election this year for the District 3 and 5 seats for the Indian River County School Board. School Board members Matt McCain and Claudia Jimenez, who represent the seats respectively, filed for re-election and went unopposed.
The School Board is responsible for setting policies for the Indian River County School District and oversees an annual budget. The proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2012-13 is approximately $282 million.
The School Board is also responsible for setting the property tax rate for education purposes. This year, the board has decided to ask voters to approve what it calls a “continuation” of 0.60-mills worth of special taxes to fund essential needs. Such needs include funding 31 teaching positions, upgrading technology, and providing for unfunded and underfunded state mandates.
