Commissioner Gary Wheeler bows out of re-election bid

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Career public servant Commissioner Gary Wheeler told supporters Tuesday morning that he will not seek re-election to his seat on the Board of County Commissioners.

An email went out to members of the Indian River Neighborhood Association, a once-powerful local political group which helped elevate Wheeler to the county commission.

In recent years, Wheeler has tried to politically distance himself from the IRNA, making it clear that the group’s mission to control growth does not control him or the way he votes.

Wheeler and the IRNA formed a partnership to push charter government, which would have sought the voice of the voters on matters that are now decided by the county commission.

That initiative failed to take hold in Indian River County, but while the debate lasted, polarized the area politically with regard to the issue of growth. Then in 2008, the economic downturn and crash in the real estate market virtually erased the growth issue from the political landscape.

Wheeler represents District 3, which encompasses areas west of Vero Beach and spans to the western border of Indian River County’s ranch and grove areas.

This is Wheeler’s second go-around on the county commission, as he served previously, before leaving the commission to become Indian River County Sheriff. Wheeler is a retired law enforcement officer.

In the note, Wheeler said that his wife, Donna, knew it was time for him to step down, but that it took him longer to figure it out. Wheeler experienced some serious health issues last year and traveled north to have surgery, but he said over the holidays that he had fully recovered and was looking forward to another term on the dais.

Wheeler had announced the start of his campaign earlier this year and had begun garnering support.

It is not known how much money Wheeler raised, as his first campaign finance report is not due until mid-April for the first quarter of 2012.

No other candidate had filed paperwork for or announced their intention to run for the District 3 seat as of Tuesday morning.

Wheeler’s email to supporters:

“After much thought and consideration I have decided not to seek re-election for the District 3 seat for Indian River County County Commission. Donna and I have discussed this for some time now and feel that it is time for me to retire and spend more time with family, leisure and travel. Donna knew four years ago, but I just caught on recently. God Bless her.

“I am writing to thank the membership of the IRNA for their confidence, trust and support for me in the past. It is very humbling to have the trust of so many to allow me to represent them. Also, for all the work put forth by the membership over the years to keep IRC a wonderful and beautiful place to live. I know that you will be looking for someone to support that shares our values and concern for our future.

“I have asked Bill to send this to the membership on my behalf Tuesday morning before I announce it publicly.”

Sincerely

Gary
