Students celebrate Lady Sharks State Champs at special rally

SEBASTIAN — The courtyard and balconies at Sebastian River High School were packed with students and faculty Monday afternoon to cheer on and congratulate their Lady Sharks Basketball Team’s State Championship win from over the weekend.

“When it comes to becoming a champion team” many traits go into it, said Sebastian River Principal Daniel Gilbertson, who listed off numerous qualities, including confidence, poise, leadership, and teamwork, amongst others. “All of these traits can be found in our championship team.”

The Sebastian River drum line and marching and cheerleaders ushered the girls team to the stage at the clock tower amidst cheers, screams and applause from their fans. Coach Terri Amy introduced her team – and a new hairstyle, having dyed her red hair blue as promised.

Coach Amy told the assembled crowd that she promised the team that if they won the championship, then she would dye her hair.

“This is my attempt at blue,” she said. “It’ll be with me a few days.”

The Sebastian River High Lady Sharks beat Haines City High School 50-46 in Lakeland, taking home the 7A State Champions trophy. Brittany Jackson led the team with 32 points, 5 steals and 4 blocked shots. KP Pound added 7 points and 12 rebounds.

The team ended its season with a 25-3 record.

“Thank you very much for coming out to support us. We couldn’t have done it without you guys. We had the biggest fan turnout ever,” said senior Sam Beigel. “It was awesome.”

Fellow senior Brooke Evans told the crowd that their team started the season with one goal – and one goal only – bring home the State Champions title.

“It’s truly remarkable and amazing that we got to this position,” Evans said. “It was not without the support from all of the community, the fans and the miles you guys traveled. I’ve never seen anything like this before and I truly thank Sebastian River High School for this amazing experience.”

Brittany Jackson, senior, also thanked the crowd for its support.

“Finally, we’re here. We made it,” she said, drawing cheers from her fellow students.
