Howard T. Powell, 96, Sebastian

July 3, 1929 – October 15, 2025

Howard T. Powell, 96, of Sebastian, Florida was greeted by Jesus, his wife and the Angels on October 15, 2025 with his family by his side. Howard loved his Lord and is resting in the arms of Jesus after a peaceful battle with dementia.

He was born to Matthew and Clara (Cox) Powell on July 3, 1929 in High Point, North Carolina.

One Saturday night roller skating, he met the love of his life, Hilda Wall. They were married on May 22, 1949 in Conway, South Carolina. At this time, he was working as a barber.

In 1953 they moved from High Point/Thomasville to Flint, Michigan with their first born daughter, Shearon. In the years following, they were blessed with three more children, Deborah, Linda and Michael. In 1981, they moved to Sebastian, Florida after Howard retired from General Motors.

Howard drove a school bus for a while then he and his wife began making crafts and attending craft shows. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, singing and jigsaw puzzles, many of which were framed and gifted to friends or displayed in his home. He loved working in his yard. Howard was a very active member of Grace Baptist Church in Vero Beach and a faithful attendee. He loved his church family and often had friends over for game nights, fellowship, fun and food. He also worked 36 years with the voting polls in Florida which he enjoyed. As dementia slowly started stealing him away, he never complained about anything and was ready to meet his Lord and Savior.

He is survived by his children: Shearon (Diane) Pontious, Deborah Powell, Linda McCarthy and Michael Powell; four grandchildren: Jon, Paul and Chadd Bradberry and Dawn Pontious; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years – Hilda; his parents; brother, Darrell Powell; sister, Peggy Washam; brothers-in-law, Gordon Dennings and Knolon Wall; sisters-in-law, Aurilla Dennings and Joyetta Wall; nieces, Teri Powell and Sonya Wall.

When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little – but not too long. And not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me – but let me go.

For this is a journey that we all must take, and each must go alone.

It’s all part of the Master’s Plan, a step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know.

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me – but let me go.

TOGETHER FOREVER!
