Student athletes could be required to report arrests or face suspension

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Student athletes could be required to report they had been arrested within 24 hours of the arrest or face suspension from play if the Indian River County School Board adopts the new rule next month.

The potential change comes from new rules brought about by the Florida High School Athletic Association, which is tasked with regulating student athletics in Florida schools.

A public hearing on the issue has been scheduled for the Oct. 25 School Board meeting to gain public input before the School Board decides whether or not to adopt the new rule.

The School Board approved setting the public hearing with a 4-0 vote. School Board member Carol Johnson was absent from the meeting.

The School Board did not discuss the issue and there was no public comment during Tuesday’s meeting.

The School Board also set Oct. 25 as the date for two other public hearings, including changes to policies regarding executive sessions and student information, and participation in a risk management association.

The public is encouraged to participate in the three public hearings.
