Tropical Storm Katia could become a hurricane later today, the National Hurricane Center is forecasting.
The storm has been gradually strengthening as it moves west-northwest toward Puerto Rico. Satellite imagery this morning indicates that Tropical Storm Katia is gradually becoming better organized.
Katia remains far enough out to sea that it is not impacting land.
The five-day forecast path for the storm continues to show Florida outside the cone, for now. Whether the storm could impact Florida remains to be seen.
Currently, Tropical Storm Katia’s maximum sustained winds are 65 mph – 10 mph shy of becoming a Category 1 hurricane.
The tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles, according to the National Hurricane Center.
