Volunteers sought for April 16 lagoon island cleanup

SEBASTIAN – Take part in the Great American Cleanup by helping to remove trash from three Indian River Lagoon spoil islands on April 16.

Volunteers will meet at Riverview Park, 650 Indian River Drive in Sebastian, at 8:45 a.m., a short boat ride away from three islands heavily used for fishing, picnics and related recreational activities.

Boats will be on hand to ferry volunteers and supplies to the island. The cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to Noon.

Keep Indian River Beautiful (KIRB) will provide trash bags, gloves and other supplies. The event is part of the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program, which occurs annually from March 1 through May 31, and involves an estimated three million volunteers.

Partners in the island cleanup are KIRB, Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Aquatic Preserves Program, Indian River County’s stormwater division and the St. Johns River Water Management District’s Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program.
