Vero Beach Boat Show April 16 – 17

VERO BEACH — The 28th Annual Vero Beach Spring Boat Show will be held on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 at Riverside Park in Vero Beach from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Boat dealers and suppliers will be displaying their product lines and will have staff available to answer your questions and help you get out on the water.

From standup paddleboards and kayaks, to deck boats, pontoon boats and shallow water skiffs, to offshore fishing machines and cruisers, marine accessories and services, and nautical goodies this show has it all.

There will be daily offshore and inshore kayak fishing seminars by Peter Hinck along with kayaks and standup paddleboards available for demos. Come meet Jimbo Meador the angler-philosopher who helped inspire the character Forrest Gump. Finance and insurance representatives will be onsite. Food and refreshments will be available.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." New fish hook regulations on our coast in the new year

Beginning Jan. 1, recreational anglers and commercial fishers along our coast who target snapper and grouper with natural bait on hook-and-line gear from boats must use only non-stainless steel hooks to catch them. The new rule for state waters --(out to three miles from shore)--recently was adopted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to improve conservation of valuable reef fish stocks.   In addition, fishers from Sebastian Inlet north will be required to use non-offset, non-stainless steel circle hooks for grouper and snapper. Man charged after opening pipes in fire suppression system

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man who deputies said purged the water supply to several businesses by opening up the pipes of a fire suppression system, was detained Friday. The man - identified as Cordero Laremy Mitchell - told deputies "he did it for the people who needs water," reports show. Mitchell's arrest report did not indicate there was a fire at the time of the incident. Deputies arrested Mitchell, 33, described as homeless, on a charge of preventing or obstructing the extinguishment of a fire. Mitchell was held Monday at the Indian River County Jail on $1,500 bond.
