Perry B. Wright, 83, Vero Beach

Perry B. Wright, 83, of Vero Beach died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at her home in Vero Beach.

Wright was born Dec. 31, 1927, in Trinidad, Colo., and moved to Vero Beach nearly 30 years ago from Wichita, Kan.

She had received her master’s degree in education from the University of Kansas and taught physical education in Kansas before becoming a general contractor and then a co-owner of Partners Cars and Trucks.

Survivors include her two daughters Julie (Dan) Wright-Connolly, of Wichita, Kan., and Erin (Chris) Wright-Campbell, of Vero Beach; son Jamie John Wright, of Vero Beach; two sisters Iris (Gail) Schweer, of Valley Center, Kan., and Kay (Russell) Snow, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

A private memorial life celebration will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Environmental groups continue lagoon cleanup and education efforts

Even as much of Florida and the world have come to pretty much of a standstill due to COVID-19, local environmental and conservation organizations are still working to clean up the troubled Indian River Lagoon and educate school children and other members of the public about lagoon issues – all while maintaining social distancing. Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings.
