VERO BEACH — Dennis Bartholomew, Executive Director of The Sun Up Center in Vero Beach, is the recipient of a United Way scholarship to attend the 2011 Leadership Indian River County class. Leadership Indian River County is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary community leadership program offered each year by the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce. Bartholomew is the first recipient of this United Way scholarship provided to a local non-profit executive to participate in the annual leadership program. The scholarship recipient is selected based upon specific criteria such as their community involvement, and career and personal accomplishments.
“This scholarship will provide personal development and enrichment for the recipient, and will pay dividends for a nonprofit agency for years to come” stated Michael Kint, CEO United Way of Indian River County.
Leadership Indian River County is based on a model that incorporates nourishing and developing community knowledge, leadership skills, and an understanding of community stewardship. The program prepares participants for more active involvement in public and private sectors and civic responsibility, and creating a better informed and vigorous leadership with a greater understanding of our county’s current and future needs.
The Chamber’s began its first Leadership Indian River County training program in January 2006 and has since graduated 96 individuals.
“The quality of a community’s future is determined by the quality of its public and private sector leadership” said Beverly Keehner, Director of Events and Leadership Development for the Chamber. “We are delighted to have this partnership with United Way to provide a non-profit employee an opportunity to participate in our program.”
