VERO BEACH — Everyone is invited on Saturday, December 4 to the Gifford Youth Activity Center Gymnasium for the annual Legends and Legacy Celebration. This year’s honorees are Willie Mae Green, a local Gifford business owner for many years, and Victor Hart Sr., who will be honored for his community service. These legendary citizens have served as role models and are positive legacies to the youth in Indian River County.
The evening will have entertainment as well as reflections of the past shared in displays of yesteryear memorabilia. Musical entertainment will be provided by A.S.A.P. (“As Smooth As Possible”) and DJ “Mighty Michael.”The event begins at 7:00 pm and tickets are $25.
Green’s business, John’s Barbershop, was founded in 1966 and is still located on 45th Street in the heart of Gifford. Green was beautician and then a barber and now her daughter Regina has continued the family business. Willie Mae Green participates and volunteers at Beyond Special K activities and events.
Hart was the founder of the Gifford Civic League in 1961 and was also very influential in the Gifford area’s NAACP. He was one of the organizers and served as the President. Hart’s efforts brought attention the need for paved streets, water and sewers and streetlights for the community.
Gifford Youth Activity Center is also accepting donations of $25to treat Beyond Special K participants.
The annual Legends and Legacy Celebration is a fundraiser for The Beyond Special “K” program. This innovative program was started in 2000 and is infused with fun-filled and valuable activities for the senior population. The focus is on the total development of individuals through aerobics, decision making skills, sewing, arts and crafts and computer classes. Beyond Special “K” provides an opportunity for nurturing an intergenerational interface between senior citizens and the youth at Gifford Youth Activity Center.
