Gifford Youth Activity Center seeking Reading/Math Mentors

VERO BEACH – The Gifford Youth Activity Center is looking for volunteers to be Reading and/or Math Mentors.  You will be an integral part in helping a child improve his reading and math skills, giving him or her an opportunity to achieve so much more in school and later on in his/her future.

For children to do well in school and succeed in life they must be able to read and understand math.   Reading and math are the foundational subjects for all educational accomplishments.

Gifford Youth Activity Center is located at 4875 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach, Florida 32967 and is a United Way Agency.

2 wounded in late Monday shooting; deputies investigating

GIFFORD — Two people suffered non-life threatening injuries following a double shooting late Monday, Indian River County sheriff's deputies reported. It was the second reported shooting to take place in Indian River County over the Labor Day weekend. Both incidents are not connected, sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Jaworski said. Details on the motive in Monday's shooting were not immediately available. Man killed in overnight shooting in Gifford

GIFFORD — A man in his early 20s was killed after being struck by gunfire overnight, authorities said. Indian River County sheriff's officials said there was no known danger to the public but are investigating the case as a homicide. "Currently, detectives are working all leads," sheriff's officials said in a statement. "There is no suspect information that can be presently shared."
