VERO BEACH — Cheryl Conley, the 2011 Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year, was the featured speaker at Exchange Club of Indian River’s luncheon meeting on September 8. As Florida’s Christa McAuliffe Ambassador of Education, she represents the Department of Education and the teachers of the state. Throughout this year, she will travel around the state conducting workshops, talking with students about careers in education, and speaking to fellow teachers, parents, and community leaders. Conley’s website, Adventures in Learning: Through the Eyes of a Teacher, can be found at http://www.cherylconley-adventuresinlearning.com.
Conley, a resident of Vero Beach, talked about her experiences as Teacher of the Year and her love of teaching children. She spoke movingly about her childhood and the importance of one teacher who was a powerful mentor in her life.
Exchange Club of Indian River meets for lunch at Culinary Capers each Wednesday at noon. Meetings feature programs on a wide range of business, government and civic, charity, personal, and professional topics. It provides the community with programs in youth activities, service, and Americanism.
