SEBASTIAN — Lakes at Sebastian city parks could eventually be open for fishing, if parks and recreation and city officials sign off on the venture.
The matter came up at a recent Sebastian Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting when a member asked about permitting fishing at various lakes.
“We haven’t put any fish in the lakes,” Public Works Supervisor Linda Kinchen said. “The fish have just found their way in.”
Committee member Scott Simpson raised the issue, explaining that he’s seen children fish out of canals and climb fences around retention ponds to fish.
Simpson said it would be nice if the city could designate a few park lakes for fishing to keep kids from getting into the canals.
City Manager Al Minner said that he would investigate the possibility of stocking a few lakes with fish for catch-and-release fishing.
He expects to report back on the matter at the next parks committee meeting at the end of September.
