Eloy Gomez, 92, of Nicholson Pa., and formerly of Vero Beach, passed away June 30 at the Golden Living Center in Tunkhannock, Pa.
He is survived by his wife Lilia H. Gomez; they were married October 14, 1941.
He was born in Havana, Cuba on Oct. 6, 1917, son of the late Eloy and Benadicta Herbas Gomez; he came to the United States in 1941.
He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1943, where he lost a leg in Normandy, France. Upon honorable discharge, Eloy was authorized to wear the EAME Campaign Medal with 3 battle stars, The Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, The Combat Infantry Badge, The Unit Citation, The American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal; and he received his U.S. citizenship.
He went back to school, despite his disabilities, and received a BS in Business from Miami University and later, a doctor of law degree from Havana University.
Before retirement he was a Senior Vice President for Wyeth International. He was also a District Governor for the Lion’s Club, a member of the VFW and the American Legion, as well as the Disabled Veterans of America.
He is also survived by 2 sons: Eloy A. Gomez of West Chester Pa., and Edward Gomez of Nicholson Pa.,; 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A Blessing Service by Father David Betts will be held July 5 at noon in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home 91 State St. Nicholson with military honors; followed by cremation RH Jones Crematory, Tunkhannock.
