American Cancer Society has programs to help cancer patients

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Dealing with cancer is hard, but the American Cancer Society is here to help.

Newly diagnosed patients can access free resources, information and guidance 24 hours a day, seven days a week via phone at 1-800-227-2345 or via web at www.cancer.org. We offer accurate, unbiased information about cancer to patients, caregivers and family.

Newly diagnosed cancer patients are eligible to receive a New Patient Packet, which provides customized information related to their cancer diagnosis.

In addition to information, the American Cancer Society also provides free support services to help patients with the day-to-day challenges of cancer. Services include:

Assistance with transportation to and from cancer treatment;

Support programs for women and men with cancer;

Confidence-restoring sessions that help women look their best while going through radiation and/or chemotherapy;

Treatment related lodging assistance;

Referrals to community and national resources.

1 patient remains at hospital following deadly Jan. 15 crash

VERO BEACH — One patient - a student - remains hospitalized following a deadly two-vehicle wreck that killed 20-year-old rowing team member Grace Rett and injured several others last week, a hospital official said. The unidentified patient - a member of Holy Cross Crusaders women's rowing team - was listed in critical condition, said Tiffany Woods, public relations director for Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce. Another patient, a driver of one of the vehicles involved, was released from the hospital Wednesday, Woods said. The driver's identity was not released. Retired sheriff’s sergeant loses battle with cancer

A retired longtime sheriff's sergeant died of cancer over the weekend, officials said. James 'Jimmy' Stewart passed away overnight on Saturday in Tennessee, where he moved after retiring from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. His age was not immediately available. It was unclear if any local memorials would be held for the retired law enforcement official. "He was a very well-respected sergeant within our agency," Flowers said. "He will certainly be missed." Stewart worked for the sheriff's office from 1986 to 2011, Flowers said.
