Former Florida governor, U.S. Sen. Bob Graham to visit Vero Beach

VERO BEACH – U.S. Senator Bob Graham is in town today to present his book, “America, The Owner’s Manual,” at the Vero Beach Book Center at 1 p.m.

Having retired from politics, the senator has taken up education, which his book promotes.

“America, The Owner’s Manual” is a how-to guide for citizens to take control of government – find a problem, determine a way to fix it, and then go for it. “Would you teach someone to play basketball using just chalkboard diagrams?” the book asks. “Or would you get them on the court and have them play? In basketball, the answer is easy — you do both. So why teach politics only as a spectator sport?”

The senator’s book is broken into chapters with case studies that examine how citizens got involved in government and solved a problem they had identified. Like a workbook, each chapter ends with a summary checklist, guidance, resources and advice.

“If citizens work on an issue they care about, politics will become a meaningful and positive experience,” Sen. Graham says in a statement about the book.

The senator served as Florida’s governor from 1979 to 1987 before becoming a US Senator. Prior to becoming the state’s governor, Sen. Graham served as member of the Florida House of Representatives and as a State Senator between 1966 and 1979.

He served as a member of the US Congress from 1987 to 2005 and ran unsuccessfully for President in 2003.

Sen. Graham has taught at Harvard University and is active in establishing two centers for training future political leaders at the University of Florida and the University of Miami.

He is currently serving as the chair of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism. The former senator is also a member of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

Sen. Graham will discuss his book, “America, The Owner’s Manual,” beginning at 1 p.m. at the Vero Beach Book Center, 2145 Indian River Blvd.
