Richard N. Brown, 80, Vero Beach

Richard N. Brown, 80, died Feb. 7, 2010, at Indian River Medical Center.

He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and was a winter resident of Vero Beach for 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Air Force.

Before retirement, he was a pilot and captain with Eastern Airlines for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ann Brown of Hampton Bays, N.Y., and Vero Beach; daughters, Kimberly Grosso of Melville, N.Y., Cynthia Jenkins of Cape Coral and Patricia Brown of Hampton Bays; son, Steven Brown of Riverhead, N.Y.; sister, Beverly Henderson of Carolina Shores, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Arrangements are by the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at lowtherfuneralhome.com.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Howle, Zudans win in Vero; Kinchen, McPartlan, Iovino in Sebastian

All results are in for the Vero Beach and Sebastian municipal elections. Voters have returned Harry Howle to the Vero Beach Council and Bob McPartlan and Linda Kinchen to the Sebastian Council. Val Zudans will join Howle on the Vero Council, while Albert Iovino will round out the last of three seats up for grabs on the Sebastian Council.
