Free tax clinics open to help working families

VERO BEACH —  United Way of Indian River County (UWIRC)  and the IRS’s VITA program have announced the opening of free tax clinics that will offer free tax preparation from now until April 15th. to anyone making under $48,000. The program is volunteer run and is being overseen by the IRS and United Way. To find a local site, people should call 2-1-1. Below is the full list of sites available.

“This is a great way we can bring and keep more income in the pockets of working families in Indian River County,” said UWIRC CEO Michael Kint. “Working families and individuals need to know that they may be eligible for tax credits worth as much as $5,657.”

This year, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment act of 2009, Congress and the President have improved and expanded the array of tax credits that can provide a significant boost to workers’ paychecks, including the Earned Income Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the newly created Making Work Pay Credit. As a result of the new legislation, more people will qualify, credits will be larger and benefits will be tailored to better meet family needs.
