SEBASTIAN — The finishing touches are underway at Schumann Park in Sebastian. The tennis courts are being resurfaced and two new basketball courts are getting striping.
“They need spruced up,” said City Manager Al Minner of the park’s courts, adding that the project is about a year in the making.
“Barring any weather patterns,” the park improvements should be done in two or three weeks, said Parks Supervisor Antoine Van Meir. Between 40 and 60 people use Schumann Park daily.
“Hopefully more” will use the park once it’s finished, Van Meir added.
Minner said that the park was “extremely dilapidated” and in need of restoration.
Schumann Park boasts six tennis courts and two newly added basketball courts. The basketball courts have replaced the racquetball courts that had been damaged during the 2004 hurricane season.
Minner said the city had planned to rebuild the racquetball courts but that the community expressed interest instead in having basketball.
Schumann Park isn’t the only facility expected to undergo changes.
Stormwater Park, near Englar Drive and Easy Street, might have shelters built sometime in the future, according to Minner. The park was deeded to the city from the St. Johns River Water Management District in exchange for the city maintaining the property.
It is a passive park with trails for wildlife observation.
Riverview Park is also expected to get improvements through new landscaping, parking, and links between different areas of the park.
Those improvements are expected to be addressed during the Sept. 23 Sebastian Community Redevelopment Agency meeting.
