[Vero Beach, Florida] – Imagine struggling to understand menus, read street signs, or directions on a package. Imagine not being able to read to your child. These are just some of the difficulties that individuals face when they cannot speak or read English. Literacy Services, a non-profit organization, understands the importance of literacy and language skills in today’s world and provides quality tutoring, free of charge, to adults seeking help in reading or learning English.
Last year, our trained volunteers devoted 7,500 hours to help 256 students, both American-born and immigrants, improve their literacy and language skills. For our students, this means getting a better job, obtaining a driver’s license, passing the United States Citizenship Test, or being able to help a child with homework. Your investment in Literacy Services will help our students become more informed, engaged, and financially stable members of our community.

The organization’s annual Love of Literacy Luncheon will take place on Friday, March 17th, at Quail Valley River Club. In addition to LSIRC student speakers, the author, Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop, will talk about her recently published memoir, “Daughter of Spies.”
Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop’s memoir, Daughter of Spies: Wartime Secrets, Family Lies (Regal House, 2022) has been called “an extraordinary and riveting true life story” and a “unique, absorbing, and fascinating World War II era memoir.” As Elizabeth Winthrop, (www.elizabethwinthrop.com) she has published over 50 works of fiction for readers of all ages. These include the award-winning fantasy series, The Castle in the Attic and The Battle for the Castle as well as the short story, The Golden Darters, read on the nationwide radio program, Selected Shorts, and included in Best American Short Story anthology. She is the daughter of the acclaimed journalist Stewart Alsop.

About Literacy Services:
Literacy Services of IRC (LSIRC) has been providing literacy tutoring to adults in Indian River County for over 50 years. LSIRC’s mission is to deliver comprehensive and innovative learning opportunities to local adults seeking English language and literacy skills to achieve their goals. A United Way supported agency, LSIRC relies on over 150 volunteer tutors who provide free, confidential and one-to-one tutoring to individuals aged 16 and older. Literacy Services also offers group classes, virtual tutoring and workplace tutoring at the request of local employers. There are currently 36 students on the waitlist for tutoring. New tutors are always needed. Tutors do not need prior teaching experience and receive training and resources from Literacy Services.
