Ward Lawrence Kenyon, 28, of Micco, was arrested on a warrant and charged Wednesday with the following:

  • attempted 2nd degree murder of a law enforcement officer
  • two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon
  • two counts of carrying a concealed firearm
  • remove serial number from firearm
  • resisting officer with violence
  • discharging a firearm in public

What happened

Police went to Earl’s Hideaway Lounge & Tiki Bar on Oct. 9 after learning that Kenyon, a convicted felon wanted on active warrants, was at the bar. Kenyon resisted when officers tried to detain him at the bar, located at 1405 Indian River Drive.

Kenyon was in possession of two firearms that were concealed during the incident, the report states. Officials determined one of the firearms was stolen in a home burglary in Brevard County, police said.

When Kenyon pulled out one of the firearms, officer Tegpreet “Preet” Singh grabbed the gun to try and control it.

Kenyon fired, striking the officer. Then a second officer, Braeden Nevue, took out his firearm and shot Kenyon, in the direction away from the bar crowd.

Kenyon then crawled under a pool table, got up on the other side and was shot by a third officer – Cpl Garrison.

Both Kenyon and Singh were taken to the hospital. Singh was treated for several days and released while Kenyon was treated and then arrested.

Nevue and Garrison were placed on administrative leave with pay after the incident, but have since returned to work, said police spokesman Cmdr John Blackledge. Details on when Singh will return to work were not available.

Kenyon was originally charged with violation of probation. He was subsequently charged with high speed fleeing and eluding after police learned Kenyon was involved in a chase with Singh a couple weeks before the shootout.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation on the shootout and will submit its final report to the State Attorney’s Office.
