Volunteers needed for DFL Pet assisted therapy program

Dogs For Life, Inc. (DFL), a non profit organization dedicated to providing services to the community, is looking for volunteers with friendly dog companions to participate in their Pet Assisted Therapy Program (PAT).

Volunteers along with their certified PAT Dogs attend pre assigned regular sessions at various facilities in Vero Beach. PAT provides warm and dog-friendly comfort to adults and children experiencing post traumatic stress, depression, loneliness or just some good old fashion companionship.

Applicants are required to hold an AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate (CGC) and abide by the DFL Program liability requirements. Obedience and AKC GCG Classes are held at the DFL off-leash dog park.

These classes prepare handlers and dogs to pass the CGC which includes: accepting a friendly stranger; sitting politely for petting; grooming and appearance; going for a walk; walking though a crowd; sitting; going down on command and staying in place; coming when called; reacting to another dog; reacting to distractions and having supervised separation.

A DFL PAT Workshop will be held at the DFL Off-Leash Dog Park at 12th Street and 16th Avenue on December 19, 2009 at 12 noon. Dogs already holding an AKC CGC certificate, or with a basic knowledge of obedience may qualify for this program. Please contact DFL at 772-567-8969 to register for training classes or the PAT workshop. www.dogsforlifevb.Com.
