Are there bats in your belfry?

WABASSO ISLAND — On Saturday, Oct. 31 the Environmental Learning Center will host the first of this season’s Green Living Workshops on its campus from 10:30 a.m. until noon.  Those taking part will build bat boxes, and the cost is $30 per family ($25 for ELC members).

Intended for families and adults, the workshops provide a hands-on way to transform your yard, your habitat and your life.  They can help control insect pests in your back yard.  At the bat box event, participants will build their own boxes and receive instructions on installation.  Many species of bats are in sharp decline, and this is an opportunity to help these littlest mammals and your own environment.

Other Green Living Workshop offerings this season include Ethical Angling, Organic Wine Tasting, Worm Bins, Gyotaku (a form of Japanese and Hawaiian printing used by fishermen to record their catch) and Mushroom Logs.

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western edge of the Wabasso Bridge.  Its 64-acre island campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop and visitor center.  A list of its many field excursions including hikes, boat excursions, nature walks and bird watching can be found at www.DiscoverELC.org.
