Genealogical Society presents immigration expert speaker Feb. 10

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society is pleased to announce that Mark Fearer will speak at its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 10, 2015. The meeting is to be held in the first floor meeting room at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach.

The business meeting convenes at 9:30 a.m. followed by refreshments and the lecture, which begins at 10:30 a.m. This gathering is free and open to the public.

Fearer is a professional genealogist who lectures, teaches and writes on the topic via his company, Ancestral Discovery. He has pursued family history since 1984 and has recently relocated from Colorado to Tamarac, Fla. He has researched in many local, state and federal archives, plus is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, National Genealogical Society and a number of local genealogy societies.

Fearer has attended a variety of national and international genealogy conferences, along with the Institute for Genealogy and Historical Research, and Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.

Although he specializes in Jewish genealogy, he works with many non-Jewish clients. For more information, please visit his website at www.ancestraldiscovery.com/.

This lecture is one not to be missed for those who have ancestors coming to the U.S. from “across the pond,” which happens to be most of the population. The U.S. is a country of immigrants, and the process of how immigrants arrived plus the records created in that route, are key to understanding ancestral origins.

Fearer’s talk will focus on U.S. immigration from 1880-1924, which encompassed the largest influx of people coming to this country; usually for economic, political or family reasons. He will discuss some myths, the bureaucracy that is critical to finding those immigrant ancestors, along with how and where they likely arrived. He will also outline some solutions for brick wall head-thumpers in locating records.
