Macy’s employee faces grand theft charge

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An internal investigation at Macy’s located in the Indian River Mall led to the arrest of an employee accused of making fraudulent purchases on gift cards.

Jeanne Spielman, 29, of the 3000th block of 50th Place in Vero Beach, is facing a single charge of grand theft and was released on $1,500 after she was booked into the Indian River County jail last Friday.

According to the arrest affidavit, an asset protection manager at Macy’s discovered Spielman was making fake returns to gift cards, then using those gift cards to make purchases. The merchandise being falsely returned appeared to be returned from Macy’s online store.

Spielman attempted to make a return to a gift card totaling $5,200 but was unsuccessful, according to the arrest report.

The total dollar amount Spielman received on the gift cards was $516.85 and she made $314.06 worth of purchases from those gift cards, according to the arrest affidavit.

Spielman told authorities she was using the gift cards to make purchases for her children, according to the police report.
