Edward “Chick” Murphy, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 30, 2014.
Murphy was born in Waterbury, Conn., to the late James and Catherine (Malley) Murphy. He was the youngest of 11 children and is predeceased by all of them except his sister, Rita Murphy.
He was predeceased by his wife Doris (Schneider) Murphy in 1995; and then married to Margaret (Wilson) Murphy who also predeceased him in 2013.
Murphy was a veteran of the Navy and United States Army Air Corps. He served in WWII as an aviator in B-24’s in the European theatre. After the war, he returned to Cheshire, Conn., where we was first employed by the United States Post Office, and later by the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections as a corrections officer until his retirement in 1980.
He enjoyed sports, and excelled at football, hockey and boxing. He remained a loyal Notre Dame fan until his death.
Throughout his final years, Murphy maintained a sharp sense of humor and enjoyed his hot fudge sundaes and fried chicken.
He is survived by great nieces and nephews and his close friends and caretakers Carol and Michael Shields. A special thanks to the staff at Sterling House in Vero Beach. Each of you made his life much happier. The end of his life was blessed by the staff at VNA Hospice Center in Vero Beach who made his final journey a peaceful one.
There will be no calling hours. Private ceremonies will be held in Vero Beach and Connecticut.
