VERO BEACH — A previous ordinance adopted by the City of Vero Beach regarding the use of detectors to enforce red lights was repealed by City Council on Tuesday evening.
According to official documents, the City originally adopted the ordinance when the State of Florida adopted the “‘Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act” regarding obedience to red light traffic controls and providing procedures for enforcement which preempt those adopted by the City Council.”
But since the Vero Beach ordinance was adopted, the detectors have not been implemented and therefore the ordinance has been rendered “obsolete.”
“City Council finds that, while violations of red light traffic control signals continue to be a serious safety hazard for the public, enforcement for violations is adequately provided for and best left to the use of authorized traditional non-automated methods and police enforcement procedures,” according to the official repeal ordinance.
