INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — On Saturday, April 28 volunteers from all over the county will gather together in a Day of Service. Spearheaded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the Day of Service is a world-wide initiative to link arms with other churches, civic organizations, and individual members of the community to serve those in need, and make our communities a better place in which to live.
The focus of the humanitarian efforts of the church has been broadened from disaster relief to service aimed at helping people and organizations who have been adversely affected by the economic recession. Many families and communities have been left in distress and in need of service. Public organizations have had budget cuts and are in need of volunteers to help them maintain their facilities and grounds.
The Indian River County Day of Service has focused on helping the agencies who serve others daily, to do what they do better. It is clear that the joy of service experienced by volunteers on the Day of Service will often lead those volunteers to consider a life of service in the future.
Some will befriend and adopt the agencies they serve from year to year, and some will pass on these friendships to their children as they follow the Saviors example of service to others in their communities.
Adopting Service as a lifestyle is the active element in uplifting individuals, families, communities, and ultimately a nation. The following resources should provide you with plenty of information on the Day of Service.
