Investigators searching waters off MacWilliams ramp for clues in murder

VERO BEACH — Divers from Indian River County Fire Rescue are on scene at the MacWilliams boat ramp searching for evidence and clues pertaining to a murder that occurred Thursday evening at 620 Fiddlewood Road on the barrier island.

What specifically they are looking for was not immediately known.

According to a neighbor who declined to be identified, investigators could be searching for either a bicycle or a weapon. The neighbor said authorities “think” the suspect had been on a bicycle.

Assistant Chief Brian Burkeen, of Indian River County Fire Rescue, confirmed they are conducting a search at the marina and that they are looking for evidence from a shooting last night.

The divers are searching a grid along the south shore of the water at MacWilliams Park. The boat ramps there have been closed to the public while they conduct the search.

According to the police department, authorities responded to the home at 620 Fiddlewood Road shortly after 6:40 p.m. Thursday reference a loud, suspicious noise in the area.

Upon arrival, they found a dead white man inside the home. Authorities have not identified the deceased.

The Vero Beach Police have not released information about the perpetrator.

“No one is in custody,” police spokesman Officer John Morrison said Friday morning.

“This is an active investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available,” Morrison said in a press release about the homicide. More information could be released later today.

Anyone having any information that may be related to this investigation is asked to contact the Vero Beach Police Department at (772) 978-4600.

“Please don’t hesitate to call us,” Ofc. Morrison said.
