Eleanor James Gara McCarthy, 71, died June 10, 2011, at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
She was born in Pottsville, Pa., and lived in Vero Beach since 2002, coming from Norfolk, Va., and Short Hills, N.J., where she lived for 27 years.
She also lived in Sedgwick, Maine, and Chatham, N.J.
Before retirement, she was a teacher in Norfolk and Ithaca, N.Y., from 1960 to 1963 and a consultant to MBW Management Inc., a venture capital firm.
She was a member of the Junior League of the Oranges (N.J.) and Short Hills, served as a guardian ad litem in the Newark, N.J., court system and was on the board of visitors of Duke University School of Law.
She also was a member of the Short Hills Club, Canoe Brook Country Club, Blue Hill Country Club, Johns Island Club and Bent Pine Golf Club.
She graduated from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in 1960 with a bachelor of arts in European history.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Philip; sons, Philip II and Robert, both of New York City, and James, of Gainesville; and sisters, Elizabeth McLaughlin, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Sykes, of Williamsburg Landing, Va.

A Mass of the resurrection was celebrated June 16 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Norfolk.
