SEBASTIAN – Sebastian’s Natural Resources Board has a few hours planned this Saturday to clean up at least one spoil island in the Indian River Lagoon, but the group needs help.
The board, which met Monday evening, is seeking volunteers and boats to help in the cleanup effort. The volunteers will be meeting at the Main Street Boat Ramp at 8 a.m. The cleanup is one of four the Natural Resources Board takes on each year and targets the island slightly south of the US 1 bridge.
Along with extra hands, the group is seeking extra boats to help ferry volunteers and their bags of debris and junk across the lagoon. Volunteers who have canoes or kayaks are encouraged to use them.
“If we have extra time and help” the volunteers could move to a second island to remove trash and debris, said Natural Resources Board Chair Robin Graves.
She explained that a group of Boy Scouts were recently out at the island and did some cleaning up on their own.
“That stuff’s so nasty,” Graves said of the junk they clean out of the nearby water and the island itself.
Graves said anyone interested in participating should plan to come early, bring sunscreen and a hat and wear good, working shoes.
The Natural Resources Board won’t be the only group out on the water Saturday collecting trash.
Graves said the Friends of the St. Sebastian River will be conducting a shoreline cleanup along the edge of the Indian River Lagoon. That group will be meeting near the pavilion at Riverview Park at about the same time.
