Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. From prison to social entrepreneur: Chris Wilson tells youth about ‘Master Plan’

A heart-to-heart conversation a young Chris Wilson had with his grandfather many years ago has stuck with him to this day. His grandfather, dying of cancer at the time, told Wilson he was disappointed in him for not applying himself in school, smoking marijuana and carrying guns. The grandfather made Wilson promise that he would turn his life around. "I was young and already in the streets, trying to figure life out," said Wilson, now 40 years old. For Wilson, that promise would eventually become a reality, but not before several heartbreaks and detours in his journey, from prison to personal tragedy. SEBASTIAN — Pony and horse rides, feeding animals and experiencing a grand tour are just a few things youth at the Gifford Youth Achievement Center enjoyed while visiting LaPorte Farms. About 40 youth from kindergarten through 3rd grade went to the farm Wednesday, located at 7700 129th Street, Sebastian. Youth were able to feed fish, llamas, ponies, potbelly pigs and more all while learning about the animals and nature from farm workers. "It's very important to let people come and experience the animals," said LaPorte Farms owner Laura LaPorte. "It's a great form of therapy."
