SEBASTIAN – Without question or comment, the Indian River County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the City of Sebastian’s plans to beautify and enhance County Road 512.
It was one the final pieces the city needed to have in place to get started on the work. The other piece the city is still waiting on is a county-issued construction permit. Once the city receives that permit, work can begin on improving three intersections along the CR 512/Sebastian Boulevard corridor.
The intersections the city plans to improve include those at Barber Street, Roseland Road and Fleming Street.
Currently, Sebastian has approximately $250,000 in the budget for enhancing the landscaping in the medians and highlighting the crosswalks. Estimated project costs, however, range from $350,000 to $440,000.
City Manager Al Minner has told the Sebastian City Council that he would work with the contractors to address the price differential.
He expects to bring a contract to the council at a later date to hire a contractor to perform the work.
If the project’s cost does come in over budget, the council has indicated that it would rather prioritize the three intersections and perhaps phase the work rather than allocate extra funds.
