Tommie Johnson, Vero Beach

Tommie Johnson died March 12, 2011, at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.

She was born in Centerville, Ala., and lived in Vero Beach for 18 years.

She was a graduate of the University of Alabama.

She was a member of Mobile (Ala.) Country Club, the Capital City Club of Atlanta, the Sweetwater Country Club in Orlando, the Grand Harbor Golf Club of Vero Beach and the Vero Beach Country Club.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Furniss Johnson, of Vero Beach.

Memorial contributions may be made to Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 1103 N. Pontiac Ave., Dothan, AL 36303; 334-792-7898.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. March 14 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, with the Rev. G. Timothy Womack of First Presbyterian Church, Vero Beach, officiating.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. 11-year-old breaks into church, steals laptop on Christmas Day

GIFFORD — An 11-year-old who deputies said broke into a church and stole a laptop on Christmas Day, was detained. Deputies also arrested the boy's mother after saying she failed to report the boy as missing. The Gifford youth told deputies he stole the $700 laptop because "he wanted something to play with," reports show. Deputies said the juvenile was a runaway. An arrest report noted the incident took place at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, located just south of St. Peter's Academy. Both facilities have the same address at 4250 38th Avenue, Gifford. INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The coronavirus didn't stop worshipers from using creative ideas to hold church services while also keeping a social distance.
