Police: Man dies after tree falls, traps him underneath

SEBASTIAN — A 74-year-old Sebastian man died Thursday while cutting a pine tree when the tree's trunk fell on top of him, police said. Sebastian police Cpt. Tim Wood identified the man as Bradford Kay. Wood said Kay's family has been notified of the fatal incident. Wood said Kay and a neighbor were using a chainsaw to cut a pine tree about 3 p.m. at Kay's home on Blue Island Street, north of Sebastian Boulevard. The two were in the backyard. At one point, the tree collapsed and the trunk fell on top of Kay, trapping him, Wood said. It was unclear how long Kay was pinned underneath the tree trunk. More than 200 conservation-minded anglers and other outdoors enthusiasts gathered Friday at Vero Beach's Walking Tree Brewery to sample craft beers and wine, chow down on savory barbecue from 14 Bones, and bid on auction items ranging from fishing tackle to African safaris --all to raise money for fisheries and habitat conservation in the Sunshine State. The occasion was the fourth annual fundraiser for the 500-member Treasure Coast chapter of Coastal Conservation Association-Florida  --one of 42 chapters in the state--and arguably the most active. 400-acre prescribed burn west of I-95

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Residents and commuters near Interstate 95 might smell smoke from a 400-acre prescribed burn Friday. A private rancher is burning off old vegetation so new crops can grow for livestock, Florida Forest Service spokeswoman Melissa Yunas said. The large ranch is located west of I-95 and north of State Road 60. The Forest Service authorized the rancher to burn from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday. All prescribed burns -whether private or through an agency - must be approved by the Forest Service, Yunas said.
