Gerald D. Vess, 75, Vero Beach

Gerald D. Vess, 75, died Jan. 1, 2011, at VNA Hospice, Vero Beach.

He was born June 22, 1935, in Glouster, Ohio, and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 12 years, coming from Michigan.

He was a member of the Florida Roadsters.

He worked as a pipe fitter for General Motors, and spent most of his working years as a plumber.

He also worked as a ski patrolman for 23 years in Michigan.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Connie; sons, Greg Vess, of Grand Blank, Mich., and Mark Vess, of Ortonville, Mich.; brother, Fred Vess, of St. Louis, Mich.; and sister, Rolla Vess, of Vero Beach.

Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice of Vero Beach, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

No services are planned. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
