Grigsby C. Peabody, 84, of Vero Beach died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Boston, Mass. After graduating from Noble & Greenough School (1943) and Harvard University (1948), he worked the following 20 years with foreign operations for the sale of textile chemicals and colors in New York and New Jersey. He moved back to Massachusetts in 1966 and worked as a real estate appraiser for James D. Henderson & Sons, Boston, Mass. In 1970 Peabody moved to St. Croix where he continued to work as a real estate appraiser and consultant. In 1979 he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he worked as sales representative with Yachts LTD (A Cheoy Lee Dealer) with retail sales of high quality import power and sailboats, Scandvik and Hallberg Rassy Yachts and marine hardware. He was also responsible for purchasing and coordinating shipments of material for building and repair of yachts with Cheoy Lee Shipyards.
Mr. Peabody retired and moved to Vero Beach in 1999.
Mr. Peabody was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, active in the Democratic Party of Vero Beach, member of Vero Beach Marine Commission, The Corinthians, Harvard Club of Vero Beach, Audubon Society and McKee Botanical Gardens of Vero Beach. He was active in human and children’s rights.
He is survived by wife, Sandris A. Silverorn-Peabody; seven children and step-children; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Peabody is predeceased by his brother, Frank Peabody.
A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
