John P. Mitten Sr., 72, Vero Beach

John P. Mitten Sr., 72, died May 15, 2010, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Neptune Township, N.J., and lived in Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from Pompano Beach, where he had lived since 1969.

Before retirement, he worked in fleet maintenance for the City of Oakland Park, and prior to that, for Eastern Airlines as an aircraft refueler.

He was a member of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Jeanette Mitten of Vero Beach; son, John Mitten Jr. of Vero Beach; daughters, Melissa Betancourt of Sebastian, Catherine Eberhart of West Palm Beach and Jennifer Seely of Margate; sister, Carolyn Brana of Spring, Texas; stepdaughters, Cynthia Dale of Melbourne and Sarah Dale of Kansas, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35 Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

No services are planned at this time.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. Sebastian officer to start trial for K-9 who died in hot car

SEBASTIAN — The long-awaited trial for a Sebastian officer whose K-9 partner died in a sweltering patrol car will begin this month in Brevard County, according to court records. Officer Eric Michael Antosia will face a jury trial at 9 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Moore Justice Center Courthouse in Brevard County, records show. The trial will be coordinated by the Brevard Circuit Judge Kelly Ingram. Antosia was charged with animal cruelty in August 2017 after his K-9 partner Diesel was found dead in the back of his patrol car four months earlier in Melbourne, authorities said.
