INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Washington Freedom capped a rainy week-long stay at Dodgertown with a 2-1 exhibition victory Friday night over the Chicago Red Stars before an enthusiastic crowd at Hobart Soccer Complex.Two days of record rainfall kept the crowd down, but the grounds crew had the field ready for action and those on hand were treated to the first women’s professional soccer game every played in the county.
Officials said over 700 tickets were sold ahead of the contest.Washington came out strong, building a 2-0 lead through the first half, with Sarah Huffman and Lisa De Vanna each posting a goal.Red Stars forward Ella Masar netted Chicago’s lone goal in the second half.The Freedom will now head north to continue training, while the Red Stars preseason continues next Wednesday, March 17 against the University of South Florida in Tampa.
