John Wade PerMar Sr., 90, died Feb. 10, 2010, at Halifax Hospice in Port Orange.
He was born in Graham, N.C. and lived in Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from Orlando. Before retirement, he was a teacher of chemistry and physics in the Orange County School System for 29 years and Florida Southern College for nine years.
He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He was a 59-year member of Thomas M. Holt Masonic Lodge 492, Graham, N.C., and a 59-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, affiliating Vero Chapter 135, Vero Beach.
He received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Elon College and his master’s degree from Rollins College. He attended University of Colorado-Boulder and Florida Institute of Technology for further post graduate studies.
Survivors include daughter, Toni Strange of Daytona Beach; son, John Wade PerMar Jr. of Eustis; stepdaughter, Miss Faye Rogers of Vero Beach; sisters, Dorothy Self of Atlanta, Jane Nicholson of Gulfport, Miss. and Iva Lou Moore of Liberty, N.C.; brother, Dey PerMar of Orlando; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at Halifax Hospice Chapel, Port Orange. Interment will be at a later date at The National Cemetary, Bushnell, with the Rev. Gary R. Moore officiating the Masonic funeral service.
