Guadalupe E. Saldana, 49, Vero Beach

Guadalupe E. Saldana, 49, died Feb. 9, 2010, at her home.

She was born in Mathis, Texas, and lived in Vero Beach for 28 years, coming from Alice, Texas. She attended St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach.

Survivors include her fiance, Adriene Balvaneda of Vero Beach; sons, Tomas Vargas of Sebastian and Ruben Estraca of Vero Beach; daughters, Nancy Vargas of Asheville, N.C., and Melody Vargas of Vero Beach; father, Jose Estraca of Alice; sisters, Nora Rodrigez of Hitchcock, Texas, Eva Garza of Alice and Anita De Los Santos of Sandia, Texas; brothers, Roberto Estraca of Alice, Jose Estraca of Benavidez, Texas, and Reuben Estraca of Alice; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Adalia Albvair Estraca.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at lowtherfuneralhome.com.

Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
