Helen Spelman, 85, Vero Beach

Helen Spelman, 85, died Feb. 23, 2010, at the Green Gables Assisted Living Facility in Vero Beach.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach since 2004, coming from Micco. She was an electric solderer for Eagle Electric and Leviton Electric in Greenpoint, N.Y., before retirement.

Survivors include her daughter, Doreen Clarke of Micco; son, John Spelman of Sayville, N.Y.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Spelman; and sister, Irene Kacher. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

A memorial service will be at a later date in New York. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at seawindsfh.com/obit.php.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said.
