Joan Galasso, 77, Vero Beach

Joan Galasso, 77, of Vero Beach, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 at Indian River Medical Center. She was born May 9, 1932 in Manhattan, N.Y. and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from Bel Air, Md. Mrs. Galasso was a homemaker and member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Vero Beach. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Russell Galasso of Vero Beach; 2 daughters, Linda Peters of Livermore, Calif., and Kathy Powell of Bel Air; 2 sons, John Galasso of Danville, Calif. and Danny Galasso of Tejeras, N.M.; sister, Elaine Johnson of East Walpole, Mass. and 8 grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 2 – 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 13, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." 11-year-old breaks into church, steals laptop on Christmas Day

GIFFORD — An 11-year-old who deputies said broke into a church and stole a laptop on Christmas Day, was detained. Deputies also arrested the boy's mother after saying she failed to report the boy as missing. The Gifford youth told deputies he stole the $700 laptop because "he wanted something to play with," reports show. Deputies said the juvenile was a runaway. An arrest report noted the incident took place at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, located just south of St. Peter's Academy. Both facilities have the same address at 4250 38th Avenue, Gifford. SEBASTIAN — Billy Wilson's impact on the community over the years was evident Saturday as family, friends, coaches, school board members and deputies gathered to pay final respects. "He was a man of integrity. He was the pulse, the heartbeat of Sebastian River High School," the school's principal Christopher Cummings said. "He was my mentor.
